Nugent is a Texan for part of each year, though he still considers Michigan his home base. And that’s brought him to two recent encounters, with Gov. Rick Snyder to talk policy and with Brent James, a Frankenmuth native who toured with him on the first leg of the tour.

“He’s a rocking young kid,” Nugent said of James. “Our manager spotted him and since I don’t get around to see other acts much between tours, I took his word for it when he said we should get Brent on the tour.

“He was right. Brent is a great performer and he really impressed me with the Detroit thing he has going on. You can feel that energy, the drive you saw in Mitch Ryder, the MC5, Grand Funk Railroad and the Romantics.

“We’re playing at DTE Energy Music Theatre on Sept. 3 and I’m trying to get him back on the bill. Detroit has to hear this.”

The night before the crash in July 2009, Jason Kott of Traverse City was performing at cava in Bay Harbor.
“I had gone back the morning after to eat breakfast and pick up my equipment, and was headed towards Elk Rapids. I was just five miles north of Elk Rapids and there was an elderly woman waiting to turn left behind someone else. She decided to just go ahead and turn left and I crashed into her head on. I broke eight ribs, an ankle and fractured two vertebrae in my back,” said Kott.
